[ THE STORY IS STILL ASLEEP ] &#60;br /&#62;
LIVE FILM AND MUSIC EVENT AT THE 2008 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL&#60;br /&#62;
This live, multi-media film and music event explores the pre-narrative ether from which the Movie emerges.  A collaboration between filmmaker Braden King, composer Shahzad Ismaily and video artist Deborah Johnson along with guest musician Michael Krassner, [ THE STORY IS STILL ASLEEP ] literally and figuratively shines a light onto the Film's initial, unconscious, non-narrative points of origin and inspiration.  In this case, the film is King's upcoming narrative feature, HERE: a dramatic, intensely visual, landscape-obsessed road movie that chronicles the relationship between an American satellite-mapping engineer and an expatriate art photographer who impulsively decide to travel together into uncharted foreign territory.  Combining Johnson's dynamic multiple projections of King's scouting and research footage, film &#38;quot;samples&#38;quot; of past and related work and Ismaily's improvised score and sound design, [ THE STORY IS STILL ASLEEP ] creates a literal and metaphoric map of the at&#60;br /&#62;
mospheric tone and dreamlife from which HERE is now awakening.  Thursday, January 24th at New Frontier on Main, 9:00 PM.  Further information: &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.sundance.org/festival/&#34;&#62;http://www.sundance.org/festival/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;

		 <link>http://truckstopmedia.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/tstpmain/20060825002301/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
New York's IFC Center is one of the few (if not the only) U.S. cinemas to show a rotating program of short films before every feature film.  IFC refers to the program as &#38;quot;Short Attention Span Cinema&#38;quot;.  &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Aug. 23-29, &#38;quot;Short Attention Span&#38;quot; will feature Bonnie 'Prince' Billy: &#38;quot;Horses&#38;quot;, directed by Braden King.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Please see: &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.ifccenter.com/event?eventid=999920&#34;&#62;http://www.ifccenter.com/event?eventid=999920&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;

SHORT ATTENTION SPAN CINEMA&#60;br /&#62;
Short Films with Music by Will Oldham&#60;br /&#62;
In anticipation of MOVIE NIGHT WITH WILL OLDHAM on September 18, the IFC Center (NYC) is presenting a series of shorts featuring songs by Oldham's Palace Music and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Wed Aug 23 - Tue Aug 29:&#60;br /&#62;
HORSES, directed by Braden King&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Upcoming films:&#60;br /&#62;
NO MORE WORKHORSE BLUES, directed by Harmony Korine&#60;br /&#62;
AGNES, QUEEN OF SORROW, directed by David Shrigley&#60;br /&#62;
CURSED SLEEP, directed by Andy Bruntel&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
A prolific and influential musician, Oldham has performed under a multitude of names: Palace, Palace Music, Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, Bonnie Prince Billy and others. He has also been involved in projects and bands such as The Amalgamated Sons of Rest, The Anomoanon and The Boxhead Ensemble. The ghostlike musical intimacy of his quiet singing and the spacey, unobtrusive acoustic accompaniment has garnered Oldham fans worldwide, especially in Ireland and Australia, and inspired some impressive artists to cover his songs. These range from Johnny Cash, whose wife, June Carter Cash, demanded he record Oldham's &#38;quot;I See a Darkness&#38;quot; after hearing it on a mix tape, to the Icelandic pop star Bjork, with whom he sang on the soundtrack of Matthew Barney's DRAWING RESTRAINT 9.&#60;br /&#62;

TRUCKSTOP Media Thanksgiving Newsletter - November 24, 2005&#60;br /&#62;
Just a couple of quick news items to digest over the U.S. holiday weekend:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
1. DUTCH HARBOR RE-RELEASED THEATRICALLY IN FRANCE&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Braden King and Laura Moya's lyric Aleutian Island portrait, Dutch Harbor: Where the Sea Breaks its Back, opened theatrically in Paris on November 23 and will expand to other cities throughout France and the Benelux region in the coming weeks.  The release is being handled by E.D. Distribution (Guy Maddin, the Brothers Quay, Harmony Korine).  A summary of French press (four stars from French Premiere!), cinemas and screening times, the French trailer, a photo gallery and a few 'secrets de tournage' can be found at Allocine.  Watch for the DVD release in the spring on Plexifilm.  The film's soundtrack is available from Atavistic. &#60;br /&#62;

&#60;br /&#62;
2. DIRTY THREE / CHAN MARSHALL VIDEO: &#38;quot;GREAT WAVES&#38;quot; COMPLETED&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Braden King recently directed the video for the single &#38;quot;Great Waves&#38;quot; from the new Dirty Three album Cinder (Touch and Go / Bella Union).  The song is a gorgeous collaboration between Dirty Three and Chan Marshall (Cat Power).  DP duties were handled by Sam Levy.  The video also features additional footage shot by Matt Boyd and Jem Cohen.  Special thanks to Art Director Tim Grimes, Producer Jenny Reiff and Washington Square Films.  See the main page of the TRUCKSTOP Media website for a link to the video.&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;br /&#62;

Conference Room #9205-07.  &#60;br /&#62;
The discussion is open and free to the public.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
(RE) CONNECTING with KARABAGH&#60;br /&#62;
A Cross Cultural and Interdisciplinary Panel Discussion at CUNY&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
New York, New York --&#38;nbsp;In conjunction with the New York book signing of Markar Melkonian&#38;#146;s &#38;#147;My Brother&#38;#146;s Road&#38;#148;, a cross cultural and interdisciplinary panel discussion, (RE) CONNECTING with KARABAGH, will take place on April 11, 2005 at City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. The event is organized by NK Arts in collaboration with Center for Place, Culture and Politics and Middle Eastern American Center at CUNY.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Panel Topic:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Headlines of the early 1990s reduced a national struggle for self-determination&#38;nbsp;into an 'ethnic conflict.'  In more recent years, however, the headlines have disappeared and one rarely hears/reads about Nagorno Karabagh. A fragile cease-fire has held for the past ten years, bringing to an end--at least temporarily--a war that has claimed twenty-five thousand lives and displaced close to a million inhabitants.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Today, Nagorno Karabagh remains in a state of limbo and 'illegitimacy.' While oil interests motivate Western powers to negotiate a&#38;nbsp;settlement between Armenians and Azeris, a handful of cultural producers have been brokering different kinds of 'conflict resolution.' This panel focuses on the narratives woven by a non native activist, an architect, a filmmaker, a geographer and a literary critic.Their work mediates a more nuanced understanding of the complex story of Karabagh.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Philosopher and historian Markar Melkonian's recent book, &#38;quot;My Brother's Road,&#38;quot; offers a compelling counter narrative of denied histories related to Nagorno Karabagh and serves as a conduit to (RE) CONNECT us with the poetics of this distanced place, scarred by&#38;nbsp;violence, and its people who call it home,&#38;quot; said panel organizer Neery Melkonian (not related to the author).&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Panelists:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The panel will be introduced and moderated by Professor Neil Smith, Director of Center for Place, Culture and Politics. Dr. Markar Melkonian will read excerpts and discuss the experience of writing &#38;#147;My Brother's Road.&#38;#148; Professor of English and Women&#38;#146;s Studies, David Kazanjian, will offer a review of the book  Architect, Silva Ajemian, will present the NK Arts festival site proposal and address the challenges of (re)creating a public space in Shushi and Filmmaker, Braden King, will show&#38;nbsp;photographs from&#38;nbsp;his location-research trip to Karabagh and talk about his feature film project. The discussant for the panel is Dr. John Antranig Kasbarian, Activist/Director of Tufenkian Foundation (Karabagh).&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The evening will conclude with book signing by the author, proceeds from book sales benefits the Monte Melkonian Fund.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Markar Melkonian recounts in unflinching and fascinating detail the nearly unbelievable saga of his brother Monte's life and death, from an all-American childhood in California's Central Valley to his youth as an armed revolutionary in Beirut and his death as an Armenian hero in Artsakh. With a brother's memory and a philosopher's keen judgment, Melkonian reanimates a truly remarkable life.&#38;quot; - Nancy Kricorian, author of 'Zabelle and Dreams of Bread and Fire'.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The event takes place on Monday, April 11, 6:30-8:30 PM, at CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, Conference Room #9205-07. It&#38;nbsp;is open and free to the public. <title>Looking For a Thrill: An Anthology of Inspiration</title>
		 <link>http://truckstopmedia.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/tstpmain/20050301163044/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;Looking For a Thrill: An Anthology of Inspiration &#60;br /&#62;
Directed by Braden King&#60;br /&#62;
Edited by Ian Williams&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
TRUCKSTOP Media is pleased to announce that the epic, star-studded DVD interview anthology originally created to commemorate Thrill Jockey Records' 10th Anniversary and 100th has just been released.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
-- // -- // -- // -- // -- // -- // -- // -- // -- // -- //&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
For Thrill Jockey Records' 10th Anniversary and 100th release, label owner Bettina Richards decided to eschew the typical double-cd label compilation, opting instead to mark the milestone a little more thoughtfully: by releasing a reflection on the core catalysts behind the life choices that she and the musicians that she works with have made.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Over 110 musicians, artists, employees and friends of the Thrill Jockey label were asked to tell a story about a record, show, or other musical moment they found particulary inspiring. The resulting &#38;quot;compilation of inspiration&#38;quot; features over five hours (!) of interviews and stories with the majority of the Thrill Jockey posse (think Tortoise, Sea and Cake, Freakwater, Giant Sand, Mouse on Mars, Trans Am and Eleventh Dream Day, to name a few) - plus such notables as Bjork, Mike Watt, Thurston Moore, Jem Cohen, Vic Chesnutt, Kurt Wagner, Ian Mackaye, Steve Albini and many, many, (we really do have to say it agan) many more.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Directed by Braden King (Dutch Harbor: Where the Sea Breaks its Back) and edited by Ian Williams (of the bands Battles, Storm and Stress and Don Caballero), the DVD is a totally unique, formally groundbreaking examination of the catalytic moments of inspiration that have led so many of these artists to embark upon their own musical and artistic lives and endeavors.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Inspiring, moving and funny.&#38;quot; - Rolling Stone&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Remarkable... It appeals to anyone who has fallen under the spell of music... not to be missed.&#38;quot; &#60;br /&#62;
- Entertainment Weekly&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Invaluable, inspiring and supercool.&#38;quot; - Filter&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
All profits from the sale of the DVD will go to Greenpeace. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;br /&#62;
And... Our friends in Chicago should check out Thrill Jockey's impending release party - this Saturday, March 5 at Tower records. Eleventh Dream Day, Janet Bean (w/Jim Zinc and Nick Macri backing her), Freakwater, The Lonesome Organist, All Natural, Califone, The Zincs, Pit er Pat and more will be performing. <title>Boxhead Ensemble Live Music &#38; Film Event at Fotofest 2004</title>
		 <link>http://truckstopmedia.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/tstpmain/20040303225653/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;FOTOFEST 2004 in association with TRUCKSTOP MEDIA / NYC presents&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Boxhead Ensemble: Stories, Maps and Notes from the Half-Light&#60;br /&#62;
Improvised Music Performance and Film Screening&#60;br /&#62;
March 13, 2004 - 8:00 and 11:00 P.M.&#60;br /&#62;
The Aurora Picture Show, 800 Aurora Street, Houston, TX - (713) 868-2101&#60;br /&#62;
Tickets: $12&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Improvising to a stellar program of poetic short films assembled by filmmaker Braden King and curator Astria Suparak, the Boxhead Ensemble will perform the North American premiere of &#38;quot;Stories, Maps, and Notes from the Half-Light&#38;quot; as part of Fotofest 2004: The Tenth International Biennial of Photography and Photo-Related Art.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Initially joining forces to create the critically acclaimed soundtrack to Braden King and Laura Moya's film, &#38;quot;Dutch Harbor: Where the Sea Breaks its Back&#38;quot;, members of the Ensemble's rotating lineup have participated in such notable musical groups as Wilco, Cat Power, Souled American, Freakwater, Gastr del Sol and Dirty Three, among many notable others.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
In this incarnation of the Ensemble, musicians Michael Krassner, Jim White, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Scott Tuma will accompany works by some of the most interesting filmmakers in modern experimental cinema, including Jem Cohen, Paula Froehle, David Gatten, Barbara Meter, Julie Murray, Guy Sherwin and Phil Solomon.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Critical praise for the Stories, Maps and Notes... European tour:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Compelling, magnetic, perfectly imperfect. This is performance art at the cutting edge but eminently accessible and personal. It is relevant, it is wonderful.&#38;quot; - Shakenstir UK&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;We like to think of the Boxhead Ensemble as a ghost ship, adrift in an endless sea of inspiration &#38;amp; freedom - thankfully washing ashore every couple years... conjuring their otherworldly sounds for us, making music that refuses to be tied to any genre, place, or time.&#38;quot; - Kurt Kellison, Atavistic Records&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;br /&#62;
MICHAEL KRASSNER - piano, organ, guitar&#60;br /&#62;
[Ensemble Director, Lofty Pillars, Simon Joyner, +...]&#60;br /&#62;
Founder of the Boxhead Ensemble as well as sometime sideman for artists including Edith Frost, Simon Joyner, Tren Brothers and Songs:Ohia. His producing and recording credits are extensive, including Boxhead Ensemble, Simon Joyner, Manishevitz, Parker Paul, Songs:Ohia and his own band, the Lofty Pillars.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
FRED LONBERG-HOLM - cello, Nykelharpa&#60;br /&#62;
[Pillow, Terminal 4, Lightbox, Peter Brotzmann 10tet, Freakwater, +...]&#60;br /&#62;
Lonberg-Holm is a top creative music cellist, active in a variety of projects in avant-garde jazz, sound experimentation and modern composition. He studied cello with Ardyth Alton and Orlando Cole and composition with Morton Feldman, Anthony Braxton and Bunita Marcus. His early career was based in New York City, working with such artists as Peep, Anthony Braxton's Creative Orchestra, John Zorn, God is My Co-Pilot and Anthony Coleman's Selfhaters. Since moving to Chicago in the early 90's, Lonberg-Holm has been involved in such projects as the Light Box Orchestra and Pillow. His recent work with Simon Joyner, Freakwater and the Lofty Pillars introduced Lonberg-Holm as one of the premiere arrangers in music today.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
SCOTT TUMA - guitar, harmonica&#60;br /&#62;
[Solo, Souled American, +...]&#60;br /&#62;
As the long time guitarist for Souled American, Tuma developed his achingly beautiful sense of suspended time and melodic deconstruction. With his solo instrumental record, Hard Again, released in 2001 on Truckstop records, Tuma expands on his palate to create a truly unique and mesmerizing aesthetic. Tuma also graces us with his recent work with the Boxhead Ensemble and Simon Joyner's Hotel Lives.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
JIM WHITE - drums and percussion&#60;br /&#62;
[Dirty Three, Cat Power, Smog, Nick Cave, +...]&#60;br /&#62;
